Release your fears: meditating for better relationships

Big changes in my life often lead to big breakthroughs. When I went through a bad breakup earlier this year, I was left with a big hole where my Radical Self Love had once been. I turned to one of my closest friends for help, and she suggested I look for some books — reading both takes your mind off of things and helps you make connections in your mind! I was led to a few books about mindfulness, and I completely devoured the literary works of Gabby Bernstein. Her books are so real and I felt like she just gets me. Her meditations tie into mindfulness and are great for healing and for strengthening relationships, whether with yourself or someone else. But as time went on, I slowly got over my breakup and slowly began forgetting about the importance of meditation in my daily routine.

"Often people say to me, "I don’t have time to meditate" or "I don’t have time to pray." My response is, "Do you have time to feel like shit?""  — Gabby Bernstein (haha!)

That is, until I saw Gabby’s post recently about fear in relationships. I definitely needed to be reminded of her meditations! My romantic life now feels great, but there’s definitely a good amount of fear that’s driving some of my behavior. So I decided to take Gabby’s advice and release my need for control over the relationship. Some people constantly feel a need, for whatever reason, to always predict and control outcomes, or stay “one step ahead” — and I am definitely one of those people! Are you?

So I hunkered down for some me-time, lit some candles, and closed my eyes to meditate. I was thinking, “I release you, I release you”, releasing my need for control over the current situation, until pretty soon I realized that I was releasing my past as well. Every person and every situation is different, so you can never predict what is going to happen — future tripping is a waste of your energy! All we can do it be present, mindful, and thankful of the present moment that we are experiencing right now. I clearly was holding on to things that went wrong in past relationships and situations, and using them as a reason to have fear in the present. I couldn’t move on be happy when I was still subconsciously holding on to so much pain and fear!

"release the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence"  — Yogi Bhajan

Of course, it’s super easy to get off track from your mindfulness practices. However, practice is a key word there! You need to work on being mindful every single day until it becomes second nature — and even then you probably need a little reminder or fresh meditation every now and then! And if you hit a little block, just thank the universe for pointing it out to you, and get to work! Gabby writes about how breakthroughs don’t always have to come from breakdowns. With some insight, self love, and open communication, you can chip away at your blocks and change your perspective. Always remember that it is your choice: You can replace your feelings of anxiety with peace!

What’s your guilty pleasure: a giveaway!

Everyone has a guilty pleasure: you know, that super-uncool thing that you adore that makes your friends cringe. Mine is definitely, unabashedly BOY BANDS. Throw on some N’Sync at a party and I am allll about it, busting out moves like I’m Wade Robson. I will always try to harmonize to that O-Town song playing in the diner. And when a One Direction song comes on while I’m teaching an art class? I’m singing just as loudly as my 8 year old students. So when I was offered this One Direction Midnight Memories makeup kit, my first reaction was : well, my first reaction was “why does One Direction have a makeup line?” But then I was like, WHATEVER, I want it! So I’ve tried out some of their products for you guys.

This collection was basically made for 14 year old girls, so the quality on most of it isn’t the best. But the colors are fun and it comes in a cute 1D themed tin, complete with their faces and signatures. And, everything is named after a 1D song: the sparkly gunmetal nail polish (my favorite item in the set) is called “Right Now”; the simply, chunky black eye crayon is “Better Than Words”, and the red lipstick is named after “Best Song Ever.” It even comes with some cute stencils shaped like crowns, triangles, and other snappy junk. The collection I received was the Midnight Memories palette. You can check out all 3 palettes by clicking here!

Wanna win a lil One Direction makeup kit? Just leave a comment below telling me what your guilty pleasure is!

xx keep it sunny

Sunshine & Bravado fashion show at Kawaiiland last Friday!

Thanks so much to everyone who came out to Kawaiiland on Friday! The fashion show went great, there were some fun performances, and the entire night was a lot of fun!

I have some stock left over from the show, so I’m offering my readers $5 off on my etsy site with the coupon code: kawaii

So check out the photos below and thanks for stopping by <3

Sunshine & Bravado showing at Kawaiiland!

Hey guys! Do you like the new layout? I even painted my nails the new colors (#dorkalert).  I felt like my site needed a bit of a makeover, especially since — big news! — my brand, Sunshine & Bravado, is getting its very own website! www.sunshineandbravado.com will be up by August 1st!

I have big hopes and dreams for S&B. Real talk for a second: When I graduated from college, I was interning with a music festival that promised to hire me, and never followed through. My first job after school was with a wholesale fashion company as an assistant designer. It was really cool at first, but working for a big company ended up being really disappointing. There was no contact with real customers, no one had pride in their designs and products, and it was truly all about the money. I was starting to feel like there was no hope of having the kind of brand that I could really believe in and be proud of. But I decided to struggle with a purpose, and for the past few months I’ve been really pouring my heart into S&B and what I think it can become. So if you have a dream, or you think you can do things differently from everyone else, then just go for it. It’s better to take a risk you can believe in, than to keep quiet!

Last month, I took part in a marketplace event with just a few t-shirts and a pre-order sheet. Now I’m showing my pre-fall mini collection at KAWAIILAND expo this Friday, July 25th at Stage 48! It’s going to be a really fun time, there will be some awesome vendors, and Nylon Pink is performing!

You can buy your tickets here.

I have been hard at work preparing for the show. This is some of my favorite work that I’ve ever done. I hope to see you there!

Guest Post: Lime Crime Clueless Witch Review!

I love doing reviews, but I’m FAR from a beauty expert. So when I asked Jack to do a guest post and she suggested reviewing Lime Crime, it was like the stars aligning. Here’s her review + BONUS MAKEUP TUTORIAL of the Lime Crime Clueless Witch Velvetines!

I’ve always wanted to be a witch, unfortunately the powers may be have not allowed it. Then Lime Crime said “put on some lipstick, and now you are one.” Today I am reviewing Lime Crime’s March 2014 Velvetines from the Clueless Witch Collection!

I have a bit of a lipstick addiction that keeps growing as we speak. I have from lustres, creams, to mattes. I’ve tried lipsticks that have great staying power but tended to break up with in an hour of use, and were absolutely hell to take off in the end. All I ever wanted was the perfect deep red, I had every other red from blue based to fire engine red to even some that border the orange schemes, but then heavens opened up on the Internet and I bumped into Velvetines. These liquid to matte lipsticks are smudge, touch, and transfer proof. The collection comes in three colors Black Velvet, Wicked, and Salem. Retail price is $20.00. The opacity on these babies is a site to see in person, one swipe and its full on color. Which you might think 20 dollars? That’s too much, but I see it as an investment. 2 swipes of color and your done! That easy, so you end up getting a lot more bang for your buck.

Now I know you’re thinking, well did you test it? Does it really last all day? Does it sincerely not budge? Well I wore both on two nights out with a couple of friends. The first night I wore Black Velvet, I applied around 7pm. I had drinks and nibbled on some food. By 9 it was still perfectly intact, as I had originally applied it.  6 hours later still good as new! The second night (the following week, I don’t party that hard) I wore Wicked for a campaign event I applied around 4pm; a few drinks, food and 8 hours later I had a tad bit of wearing inside of my lip, which is normal with most lipsticks; grease can do that people. The great thing about the product is that it doesn’t build up or bead up when you re apply. A simple fresh coat and you’re good as new again.  Well what about taking it off after a long day? Easy, they can easily be removed by make up remover in a few swipes.

BUT, BUT, BUT JACK… there has to be something that is wrong with this product, it can’t be perfect! Well truthfully the one thing I will say is, it is quite drying, but that is with all if not 80 percent of most matte lipsticks. So I would advise in prepping your lips before you apply it.

Did I mention the crazy amounts of complements you will receive when you wear it? These lipsticks should also be considered confidence boosters.

Down below I did a step-by-step tutorial on how to wear Black Velvet; plus swatches!

EYES:

STEP 1: Prime your lids.

STEP 3: Apply an eye shadow similar to your skintone.

STEP 4: Using a light peach eye shadow apply it outer crease and a little bit above the brown bone.

STEP 5: Take a daker more muted shade of peach into the crease and blend…remember none of these colors are touching your lid.

STEP 6: Take a taupe brown shadow and put the most color at the inner corner of your crease and the outside corner of your crease and blend slightly towards your eyelid.

You will be creating a very 1920’s hazy look once your done.

STEP 7:  Add a golden eyeshadow to the center of the lids and near the tear ducts. If you want more of wet sheen look, wet your brush and apply the color.

STEP 8: MAKE SURE EVRYTHING IS BLENDED TO PERFECTION!

FACE:

STEP 1: Start with a fresh cleaned face, then moisturize and prime that canvas.

STEP 2: Apply your favorite foundation.

STEP 3: Conceal any imperfections/pimples/scars you may have, or area you want covered.

STEP 4: Highlight the planes of your face you want to put in the forefront.

STEP 5: Contour the areas of the face you want to recede.

STEP 6: Fill in your eyebrows if necessary.

STEP 7: Line your lips and apply lipstick

STEP 8: Add a small amount of blush since the color of the lip takes over the show.

STEP 10: Spray face with Setting spray.

STEP 11: Add Mascara and you’re good to go!

How to Deal with Anger

I read recently that some psychologists define anger as a panic reaction. Meaning, that moment when you start to feel angry, your blood is bubbling around your ears, your vision tunnels, and you want to scream? Those are all VERY similar reactions to someone who is having a panic attack! Therefore, I think that a great way to treat anger is to treat it as a reaction to panic. It’s like your brain and body are having an allergic reaction to your emotions about a situation.

I’ve always had a big problem with being afraid of my anger. I was afraid of becoming out of control, feeling crazy, or people not liking me if I seemed angry. So, I just tried to never get angry. And when I did, I had zero tools to handle my anger with, so I just became frustrated and upset. Thinking of anger as a normal, healthy reaction that is easily handled really changed the game for me. It’s something to process, just like any other emotion in your ol’ brain.

Some tips to process and handle anger better:

  • In the moment, take a second to stop and take a deep breath. Think about how you are feeling, and why. EFT and Meditation are great for processing emotions.
  • Know and understand that you are angry, but realize that the world doesn’t have to know it.
  • Write an angry letter, don’t send it, and then burn it.
  • Figure out where in your body you feel your anger, and then allow yourself to really feel it.
  • Write or draw or make something creative. Tearing cotton fabric is the best feeling ever.
  • Just vent to a friend. It happens, and sometimes I understand things better when I talk about them out loud.

If you’re feeling angry at a specific person, it’s okay that they know it. Being angry at someone doesn’t necessarily mean that your relationship with them is ruined. Hell, I’ve been friends with my best friend for 18 years, and we’ve been angry at each other countless times! The key is to take a deep breath, don’t say or do anything you’ll regret later, and to think, I’m angry at this person, but I still care about them. Then, you can both apologize and you’ll forget that you were ever angry in the first place.

Some advice that I was given recently is, “the best revenge is living well.” If you’re despairing, you may feel like it doesn’t matter, the world is shit, so why take care of myself? Well, if for no other reason, think of it as a form of revenge! You’re avenging your happiness by doing whatever it takes to live a great life. Extra credit if you help other people live a great life, too.

Necessary disclaimer: I’m not a doctor or anything, so this isn’t medical advice. I’m just a friend talking to friends about life!

Have a fantastic week, babes.

Are you the one who “cares more”?

I often find that people my age are incredibly guarded when it comes to relationships, whether they are romantic relationships or friendships. No one wants to be the person who “cares more” in the relationship, who is more invested, and who ultimately has more potential to get hurt if the relationship goes wrong.

I read an opinion pieces by Kovie Biakolo, where they write about this very subject:

Just yesterday, some girlfriends and I were talking about boys and I quoted Almost Famous as my romance mantra, “If you never take it seriously, you never get hurt.” And it wouldn’t be the first time I’ve ultimately come off as cynical about relationships. People think it stems from really not caring; on the contrary, it stems from the fear of caring too much.

Being the more caring person isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It means that you have a deeper capacity to love, and that you take your relationships seriously and treat them with respect. Being the one that “cares less” won’t necessarily make you cooler, or happier, or stronger. It will simply give you shallow connections to people, and it denies you of the beauty of experiencing love deeply and without fear. I know that getting your heart broken can fill you with fear in relationships, but humans are resilient and learning to let go of that fear is really what will make you stronger in the long run. I think that as long as you love yourself, and are putting your relationship with yourself first, then you shouldn’t feel bad about being the more invested person in the relationship. Also, you can’t exactly know what the other person feels! They may care just as much or more, and just not show it in the same way that you do.

As usual, I’m writing this post partly for you guys, and partly for myself. It can be a bumpy road to feeling strong enough to not worrying about who cares more.

I really like this KateOrDie Comic: Click through to see the whole thing.

If you think about relationships as an equal partnership instead of a power struggle, it gets a lot easier to release that fear. If you want some more info on releasing fear AND a beautiful, amazing meditation, check out this article by Gabby Bernstein.

A Course in Miracles teaches us that there are “no chance encounters.” All encounters offer us the opportunity to transform fear to love and create a miracle. Accept that relationships are assignments to learn and grow. —Gabby B.
